Nick Cave is an American fabric sculptor, dancer, and performance artist best known for his figurative sculptural “Soundsuits.” Constructed of found materials and designed to rattle and resonate in concert with the movement of the wearer, these works reference a range of cultural, ritualistic, and ceremonial concepts. Cave discusses his work as Performa, focusing on strategies that mobilize, activate, instigate, and escalate.

This lecture took place on November 10, 2011 as part of the University of Michigan School of Art & Design’s Penny W. Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series. Established with the generous support of alumna Penny W. Stamps, the Speaker Series brings respected emerging and established artists/designers from a broad spectrum of media to the School to conduct a public lecture and engage with students, faculty, and the larger University and Ann Arbor communities.
