Video portrait of David Chung’s installation, Pyongyang, created for the Institute of the Humanities at the University of Michigan.
The Pyongyang statue is a communist iconic monument in the capital of North Korea. Religions like Buddhism are
actively discouraged in North Korea. In South Korea, they still practice an annual paper lantern lighting ceremony where handmade lanterns are put together by the community and then
lit. This Buddhist ceremony ends with the burning of the lanterns.
David designed a large paper lantern in the shape of the North Korean torch. A team of volunteers were employed to help build the lantern.
David Chung is a faculty member at A&D.
